Mold Remediation in Jacksonville Homes is Necessary to Overcome Colonies

12/5/2022 (Permalink)

mold growth in corner of room It does not take long for mold growth to get out of control. SERVPRO is standing ready to remediate your home!

The Importance of Prompt Mold Remediation

When you believe mold damage exists in your home, there is little time to waste to act on these discoveries. Mold continues to move and spread, finding new hosting materials to use as a food source. It does not take long for situations to get out of control and infiltrate areas where accessibility is an issue.

Is Mold Going to Harm Your Home?

Before people can appreciate their need for mold remediation in Jacksonville homes and businesses, they must determine how mold can threaten their structure. It is often believed that microbial growth is common and less concerning when discovered. Several considerations make mold a threat to your property and a nuisance to comfortable living:

  • Destroying Structure – One of the primary ways mold can be a concern for your residence is the knowledge that colonies use organic matter as a food source. Materials like drywall become deteriorated from hosting these organisms, requiring them to be removed and replaced.
  • Wet Materials - Because mold cannot exist without moist conditions that facilitate colonization, damp and humid environments persist when mold damage is present. Our IICRC trained professionals must overcome the active growth and address wet pockets that could allow mold damage again.
  • Harsh Malodors – Another concern for active colonization is the volatile organic compounds that create offensive environmental malodors. SERVPRO professionals must use deodorization equipment and products to overcome these threats.

Needed Mold Damage Remediation

There are multiple strategies for removing mold colonies from your home. Depending on the severity and placement of active colonies, we can address these concerns with surface cleaning solutions, aggressive abrasive blasting, sanding, or even controlled demolition when other options have been exhausted.

Mold damage does not have to ruin your Jacksonville home. Call our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team today at (910) 319-0600.

Psychometry Principles for Jacksonville Water Damage Restoration

11/3/2022 (Permalink)

Water spewing from pipe Air temperature and humidity can affect the drying process.

Drying Factors of Water Damage Restoration

One of the critical lessons our SERVPRO team learns in our pursuit of knowledge on effectively managing water and flood damage is psychometry, or the study of how water behaves with materials and under specific conditions. Knowing these answers can help our restoration team to provide direct and effective drying and cleaning approaches. Ultimately, the process comes down to balancing specific drying principles.

Suitable Airflow

Water damage restoration for Jacksonville properties will start with the proper drying equipment and implements. The use of air is crucial to begin evaporation and allow moisture grains of the environment to find their way outside the residence. Manipulating airflow can involve several approaches and pathways, including:

  • Air movers
  • Ventilation
  • Structural openings

The Right Temperature

There are many ways that having an ideal drying zone temperature will help the efficiency and efficacy of water removal and restoration. Warmer temperatures allow molecules to move faster, ultimately drying surfaces quicker or permitting needed surface-cleaning chemical processes to do the same. Warmer temperatures in the drying area also increase the relative humidity, allowing the environment to absorb more moisture before stalling the evaporation processes.

Regulating Relative Humidity

Humidity is another essential factor of psychometry to consider. More than balancing the airflow and the temperature is required, as the environment ends up overwhelmed by the newly generated moisture grains from the evaporation process. SERVPRO must implement tools and strategies to reduce this relative humidity to manageable levels, allowing the complete drying process to continue and reducing heavy air saturation that might promote secondary threats like mold growth. Tools used in this process can include:

  • Hygrometers
  • Heaters
  • Desiccants
  • Low-grain refrigerant dehumidifiers

You cannot predict how disasters will impact your property, but you can choose who to trust with water damage restoration in your Jacksonville home. Give our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team a call at (910) 319-0600.

Handling Storm Flood Damage in Hampstead Homes Calls for Expertise

9/22/2022 (Permalink)

Person wearing boots walking through floodwater SERVPRO of Pender/West Onslow Counties has the expertise to safely restore your flood-damaged property.

How SERVPRO Handles Storm Flood Damage in Hampstead

When dealing with flooding issues resulting from a storm, the expectations regarding restoration are high because floodwater usually contains potentially harmful contaminants. Biological contaminants like bacteria and viruses occur naturally in floodwaters. The water can also seep into the walls and floorboards, causing fungus growth like mold.

The other effects of flooding include peeling paint, warping or cupping of wood floors, damaged wiring, and rotting drywall. When storm flood damage occurs on your Hampstead property, SERVPRO is the right firm to hire. Our flood damage repair process may include the following steps:

  • Inspection
  • Pack-out
  • Water extraction and drying
  • Deodorization
  • Reconstruction

Inspection

Our team can assess the damage from the storm, document everything thoroughly, and create a suitable restoration plan.

Pack-out

A pack-out falls under the private property section in your homeowner’s insurance policy. Our SERVRPRO team can clean, dry, and properly repair the items removed from your residence before returning them. We are well-equipped to pack-out different things, including appliances, furniture, and the contents of kitchen pantries or cupboards.

Water extraction and drying

Our SERVPRO technicians can remove the water using powerful pumps. Our team can also use axial air movers to dry your home. Axial air movers deliver lower pressure at high volume and can cover larger areas of affected materials. We can place refrigerant dehumidifiers in the middle of affected rooms to ensure even drying. These devices eliminate water vapor from the air through condensation.

Deodorization

Flooding often causes a foul smell. We can use deodorizing pellets or granules to eliminate it. These are odor absorbers containing fuller’s earth as their main ingredient. It functions like a sponge to hold and absorb smells. We can apply the pellets to a particular area or the whole home.

Reconstruction

SERVPRO can perform minor and major repairs to restore your residence. Minor repairs may include replacing drywall, painting the home, and replacing carpeting. The significant repairs may consist of reconstructing specific structures like the hardwood floors.

In the event of storm flood damage, call SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties at (910) 319-0600 for restoration services. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

SERVPRO Can Perform Fire Restoration in Your Jacksonville House

9/20/2022 (Permalink)

Fire damaged rook, debris on floor; smoke and soot damage on wall No matter the scope of the fire, smoke and soot damage occur. SERVPRO is your one-stop-shop to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Fire Restoration in Jacksonville is Best Left to Professionals

A fire in your residence can be devastating, and the restoration process might appear overwhelming. The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) states that fire is reported every 24 seconds in the United States, with the direct damages accruing to as much as $23 billion in property damage yearly. After the fire department completes its job, it is the turn of restoration professionals to get your home to its preloss condition.

SERVPRO has brought together a well-trained team of fire restoration professionals to ensure that homeowners encounter no hardships after the incident. We have the latest restoration equipment and products to effectively perform fire restoration in Jacksonville homes. Our technicians are well versed with the S740 Standard set by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC), which contains the guiding principles for a safe and efficient restoration. To restore a property, SERVPRO performs these broad categories of tasks:

  • Assessment of the extent of the damage to the property and the contents.
  • Taking actions to prevent additional damage.
  • Decontaminating the house from soot, smoke, and dust.
  • Restoration of the property and the contents to their conditions before the fire.

One of SERVPRO’s most vital restoration services is cleaning up. A few minutes after the fire, smoke may discolor the walls, rust can start forming due to acidic residue, and acid stains can be visible. Appliances are most likely to be stained, and a lot of soot residue may be left behind. We have industrial-grade cleaning solutions to ensure none of these are unsolvable problems.

We also deodorize a property to remove the unpleasant smells and sanitize the house to ensure it is safe for your re-entry. Our SERVPRO restorers can use a photocatalytic oxidizer to deal with the odors. In this device, a photocatalytic lamp shines ultraviolet rays on a titanium dioxide surface and produces hydroxyl radicals. These radicals break down and oxidize bad smells into water and carbon dioxide.

A stitch in time saves nine. Taking time before calling us can worsen the fire damage. Call SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties at (910) 318-0600 for fast, efficient, and cost-effective restoration services. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Why You Might Need a SERVPRO Mold Remediation Team in Hampstead

8/19/2022 (Permalink)

Mold growth along ceiling and wall by window Many strains of mold exist that might inhabit your home. SERVPRO’s mold remediation addresses each kind and can protect your residence.

Our Mold Remediation Prevents Future Colonization

Many strains of mold exist that might inhabit your home in Hampstead. Not all types of mold act the same. However, SERVPRO’s mold remediation addresses each kind and can protect your Hampstead residence.

There are various reasons why you should have SERVPRO perform mold remediation to protect your Hampstead dwelling. Besides leaving your property protected from re-colonization in the future, we provide excellent value to our customers in other ways.

You can depend on SERVPRO to protect your home and its contents from microbial infestation by:

  • Curing the problem of excessive humidity that attracts microbes,
  • Removing carpets, drywall, or other infested materials and replacing them, and
  • Using a powerful microbial inhibitor that treats current mold and repels incoming microbes.

Too much moisture does more than cause materials to deteriorate more rapidly – it creates a welcoming setting in which microbes thrive. Our IICRC trained techs eliminate this problem by using drying equipment like our air movers and desiccant machines. Moisture detection equipment helps us locate the source to stop additional water from seeping into your home.

SERVPRO can also provide dry cleaning services for customers’ clothing, draperies, and other household linens. Even non-cellulose fibers can support microbes if any organic matter has gotten embedded in the fabric. Specialized cleaning removes contaminants and can preserve clothing and household furnishings, including upholstered furniture.

Concrobium sprayed onto just-cleaned surfaces seals everything. As it dries, this clear liquid immobilizes leftover microbes and leaves the surface inhospitable to any new microbes that might have started a new colony. We can also reduce the risk of infestation of new materials we install in your home by coating them with Concrobium.

Removing mold is not enough. SERVPRO helps protect houses in our area by preventing future infestations by making the interiors of our customers’ dwellings inhospitable to microbial life. Prevention is part of thorough mold remediation.

Call SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties at (910) 319-0600 for services your family can count on to protect your residence and everything inside.

Fight Dampness in Jacksonville with Professional Water Mitigation

8/12/2022 (Permalink)

Copper Pipes Water damage spreads far from the source. SERVPRO has the technology to locate the hidden moisture.

The Ways Water Mitigation Protects Your Property

Leftover dampness from a water leak can remain within your home’s atmosphere long after you have fixed a leaky pipe. Our professional water mitigation team can help by ensuring your Jacksonville residence experiences appropriately dry conditions.

Prompt and proper water mitigation of your Jacksonville home provides more than one type of protection. If any of these conditions have become established within your residence, then you can trust SERVPRO to eliminate them. A lack of excessive and unnecessary moisture protects you and your property from secondary damage that even small amounts of water can cause.

The conditions that you should be aware of so you can protect your home include:

  • Microbial overgrowth,
  • Softening and weakening of porous materials, and
  • Unwanted odors.

Microbes like mold or mildew can stain clothing, ruin keepsakes, destroy paintings, and much more. Microbes have deep-reaching tendril-like structures that dig into whatever it lives on, leaving discolorations behind when someone cleans the surface.

Damp pockets in your dwelling can lead to the destruction of materials like drywall and carpeting. Dry rotting takes place slowly but is very preventable. Repairs are almost impossible, making replacements the norm.

Foul odors that do not seem to come from any specific location might stem from stagnant water near the air intake vents for your HVAC system. Air fresheners and room deodorizers cannot do anything substantial because the next time the heat or A/C starts, a new batch of smelly air gets pushed into your home’s living space.

When SERVPRO performs water mitigation, we use special detection equipment that shows where the intrusive water originates. When doing this work, we drain or otherwise remove any water or moisture present. Then, we can seal off the sources of water, which helps keep your home from becoming damp in the future.

Call SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties when your home is giving you problems at (910) 319-0600. We can help find existing problems and get things fixed for you.

Fire Restoration Makes Your Jacksonville Warehouse Sound Again

8/5/2022 (Permalink)

$50 bill being burned at both ends Fires have lingering effects that can be expensive. Our fire restoration team can remediate any scope of commercial fire damage.

Risk to Investments Negated by Fire Restoration

After extinguishing a blazing fire and keeping goods and equipment from burning, you might feel your Jacksonville business is safe. However, damage can continue to happen, increasing your losses. Our fire restoration crew knows how to keep damage from worsening.

Commercial buildings in Jacksonville need fire restoration and thorough cleaning after a fire, especially one where synthetic materials burned. Restoring your warehouse or other storage facility means a fresh start, one in which your inventory, equipment, workers, and everything else works as it should.

Businesses know they can rely on SERVPRO’s fire restoration services for these and other reasons:

  • Tearing out charred materials, including roofing materials, and rebuilding of same components,
  • Clearing surfaces and even the air, including your HVAC system, of soot and caustic gasses formed during the fire, and
  • The basics of protective measures can keep immediate damages at a standstill.

When roofing materials sustain damage during high heat, they can become brittle and weak. Keeping roofing or ceiling panels from breaking apart and falling onto anything below keeps stuff from becoming further damaged. These components can contain sharp edges, nails, or other brackets that can scratch paint and different finishes on equipment or dent packaging of finished products.

Our specialized cleaning tools remove soot from surfaces, including the interior of your ventilation system. Air scrubbers help to eliminate even more soot particles. Air movers can help remove gases by pushing air outside; negative air pressure chambers can also help with this if needed.

Boarding up doorways, windows, or other openings can help keep security at an appropriate level. Tarps can prevent rainwater from getting inside until we can rebuild damaged structures.

In addition to these, SERVPRO also offers temporary warehouse space. When fire damage and outages of electrical power both happen simultaneously, we can provide our own power, keeping us on schedule and helping your company get back on track as quickly as possible.

Contact us, SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties, at (910) 319-0600 for the tailored, exact services you need to keep your business going.

Mold Remediation Process for Jacksonville Homes

7/21/2022 (Permalink)

Magnifying glass showing closeup of mold When beginning mold remediation for Jacksonville homes, SERVPRO prioritizes any effort to limit further damage to the household.

SERVPRO Offers Consistent Mold Remediation

The due process for remediating after mold damage might change from one property to another, but the core elements vary little. Combining the experience of remediators with our general contractor license for repairs and reconstruction, we provide a full-service approach rooted in several fundamental recovery actions.

Establishing Containment

When beginning mold remediation for Jacksonville homes, SERVPRO prioritizes any effort to limit further damage to the household. Our greatest action to combat spore activity and migration is the erection of containment barriers. When combined with the efforts of HEPA air scrubbers and negative pressure machines, these physical structures are the best defense for a property in the early remediation stages.

Focusing on a Dry Environment

Much like an urgent need to protect the structure from migrating microbes, SERVPRO IICRC trained professionals must also take direct action for moisture damage and damp pockets. Humidity and moist materials make a suitable climate to facilitate mold growth. Considerable focus is necessary to fully dry the property to acceptable ranges, using many tools like:

  • Air movers
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Heaters
  • Negative pressure

Clearing Settled Spores

Settled spores are cleaned from surfaces, typically with HEPA vacuums. Because these settle downward, technicians of our team will clean from the top of a surface towards its base. Often, cleaning in this manner happens over several rounds of the same action.

Removing Materials as Needed

When exposed materials have become too badly damaged and impacted by infestations, such as most porous hosting elements, professionals on our roster must discard them. We conduct controlled demolition to preserve all the building materials possible.

Cleaning and restoring your home after mold and microbial threats typically involves these actions. The fundamental approaches can effectively reduce active organisms and their impact on a structure. Call our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team today for mold remediation assistance at (910) 319-0600.

Prepare Your Jacksonville Home for Water Mitigation

7/14/2022 (Permalink)

Flood cuts along water damaged wall; SERVPRO restoration equipment being used to dry rooms Water damage can destroy building materials, especially highly porous additions to your home like drywall and carpeting.

Prepared Water Mitigation is More Efficient

Mitigation for any disaster or emergency your home experiences is vital to protect the structure from greater harm. Our SERVPRO team prioritizes a swift response to water emergencies for this reason, protecting contents, porous materials, and personal belongings from irreparable destruction. SERVPRO can take some steps even before mitigation, however, that help make this process more focused.

Creating a Staging Area

A clean and nearby workspace is a critical element of water mitigation for Jacksonville homes. Staging areas allow our SERVPRO team to bring tools near the work area to prevent continually tracking through the property and risk contamination with changing conditions in the drying zone. Some staging areas can be used to evaluate damaged contents and restore them without requiring off-site pack-out procedures.

Clearing Out Bulk Materials

Water damage can destroy building materials, especially highly porous additions to your home like drywall and carpeting. In many cases, early evaluation of these conditions can be critical to determine what elements must be removed and discarded to protect the rest of the structure from moisture damage, mold, and contaminants.

Scoping the Job

Job scoping is an important early action to take as well. When it occurs before the bulk of mitigation services, we can better understand the spectrum of damage and restoration priorities. Data collected by damage assessments can dictate the need and urgency of recovery efforts like:

Water mitigation is a combination of several efforts to best protect a home from severe damages that are potentially avoidable. Our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team understands how quickly water disasters can get out of control and spread, so we work fast to reach your home to begin these emergency services and mitigative steps to help. Call us today at (910) 319-0600.

Extracting Flood Water from Hampstead Basements

7/8/2022 (Permalink)

storm clouds and lightning Did your home experience flooding with recent storms? SERVPRO has the extraction equipment to remove the water.

Basements can be a common area affected by flooding, as water seeks the path of less resistance, letting gravity pull it to the lowest possible point in the house without obstruction. When water begins to pool at this level of the residence, flood extraction is necessary to protect your belongings and the home's structural integrity.

Patching Structural Vulnerabilities

When beginning the recovery of flood damage in Hampstead homes, including water removal from the basement, it is prudent for technicians to learn where water is penetrating the structure. Patching foundation vulnerabilities make the upcoming water removal services faster and more productive.

Water Removal Services

Removing standing water from the structure is one of the most direct methods of helping a home after flood damage. It quickly finds its way to the basement of residences, even when the penetration did not originate through the foundation. The result can be several inches, or even feet, of pooling floodwater at this subterranean level. We have several extractors to overcome potential obstacles like:

  • Deep Extraction - The depth of the damage can influence the choice of an extractor. Greater volumes require more powerful units, including our truck-mounted options for several hundred gallons per minute of production.
  • Floating Debris - Solids and matter can limit the options for extractors when clearing out the house. Trash pumps have become a trusted option for a high discharge yield.
  • Elevation Pumping - Because pumps are sometimes asked to push several feet to reach grade, high-pressure pumps can sometimes be preferred.

There are many challenges to protecting and restoring the basement level of a house after destructive flooding. With these disasters' impact on the structure, it is vital to get emergency services started as soon as possible - especially water removal. Our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team is standing by now to help at (910) 319-0600.

Water stains on drywall and baseboard After water damage, SERVPRO will determine if the drywall and other structural components are salvageable.

Hampstead SERVPRO Water Cleanup for Structures

Home plumbing concerns can crop up suddenly and create increased expenses for homeowners. These disasters can lead to increased water bills, damaged walls and framing, and potential mold growth, which can cause health effects. Proactive, emergency-response cleaning can save property owners hundreds to thousands of dollars while keeping occupants safe.

SERVPRO water damage restoration can restore Hampstead homes to a sanitary condition with EPA-registered biocides and commercial-grade tools. This firm also performs rebuilding services that include drywall repair, baseboard reinstallation, and repainting after mitigation.

How SERVPRO Restores Wet Drywall and Baseboards

SERVPRO technicians can often save water damaged drywall and baseboards after disaster strikes. While some materials are not salvageable, others are restorable to a pre-disaster state.

Crew members can use the following strategies to restore structural materials while saving homeowners on repair and replacement costs incurred by water disasters.

  • Cutting out small portions of wet drywall or drilling small weep holes into it, forcing air into wall cavities with axial, centrifugal, or low-profile air movers and tubing designed for this type of drying
  • Removing wet baseboards and manually cleaning or spraying them with OSHA-approved biocides before implementing extraction and drying tools. In cases where baseboards are not salvageable, technicians can install replacements after drying is complete
  • Drying typically entails the use of air movers and dehumidifiers together. Positioning for these items is critical: air movers generally are set at 45 to 90-degree angles along the perimeter of the impacted area every 150 to 300 square feet, or less in more serious water scenarios

Mold Mitigation from SERVPRO is Available 24/7

Mold damage can begin within a day or two of moisture exposure. These microbes eat away at organic materials like sheetrock, specific varieties of insulation, and even wall framing, floors, and ceiling joists.

Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) compliant mold remediation from Jacksonville SERVPRO technicians can successfully reduce spore populations to pre-disaster levels. Professional remediation keeps homeowners safe and can include rebuilding services like structural repairs.

SERVPRO Availability Maximizes Home Restoration Potential

Mold cleanup technicians from SERVPRO are available seven days a week and at any time of day to address microbial concerns such as:

  • Spore clusters
  • Stains
  • Malodors
  • Structural damage
  • Indoor air quality (IAQ) concerns

SERVPRO IICRC trained techs take caution when addressing mold, including using and decontaminating commercial-grade personal protective equipment (PPE) and sealing contaminated areas with polyethylene sheeting. This includes partial sealing of ductwork to prevent mold from migrating during remediation.

Restoration professionals address mold with EPA-registered biocides and take measures to remediate the conditions in which mold thrives by drying the affected structure with air movers and low-grain refrigerant or desiccant dehumidifiers. Microbial movement is controlled with HEPA-filter air scrubbers that lower local air pressure in sealed areas, which causes spores to fall to the floor for technicians to collect with vacuums.

Odor control technicians (OCTs) ensure that mold and moisture odors are eliminated on a particle level with the help of ultra-low volume (ULV) foggers, sprays, scented granules, time-release pellets, and counteractant odor beads, among other solutions.

  • The ceramic tile itself is highly water-resistant, but moisture can create mold growth in grout and cause the material to swell and warp. This deformation of tile grout can cause tiles to delaminate or crack. SERVPRO can respond with proprietary tile and grout cleaners, as well as drying equipment, that can minimize potential damage to tile flooring
  • Concrete is typically very hardy, but water can aggravate cracks in flooring and encourage the growth of chalky mineral deposits called efflorescence. SERVPRO techs can address these concerns with extraction, drying, potential repairs, and powerful floor scrubbers

Business owners can call SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties at (910) 319-0600. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster and committed to providing emergency-response mitigation.

Flood Damage Cleanup from Jacksonville Basements

4/21/2022 (Permalink)

Heavy rain hitting roof of home. When flooding happens, fast remediation is necessary. SERVPRO is always available 24/7.

Pooling and Flood Damage in Jacksonville Basements Must Be Removed Promptly

Flooding is not uncommon for Pender and Onslow County homes and businesses. Harsh weather systems can generate ideal conditions to create disasters like flash flooding, which destructively surges at residences in the neighborhoods we serve and require fast restoration. An area of many houses at risk is the basement.

Identifying Penetration Points

Overcoming flood damage in Jacksonville homes, particularly the basements, begins with understanding how the condition occurred. Penetration points for flooding must be identified and resolved in the earliest stages of recovery to keep the situation from repeating during the restoration and cleaning processes.

Removing Water

Standing water needs to be removed as fast as possible from flooded areas of your house. Water migration can result in heavy pooling in this subterranean portion with lower levels like the basement. Because natural flooding often introduces particles and solids along with the standing floodwater, only specific extraction units can be effective. Trash pumps and truck-mount extractors are preferred removal options.

Muck-Out Cleaning

Matter carried in with floodwater is a considerable concern for homes at the basement level. Not only must the surface water be resolved promptly, but failures to remove the debris and bulk materials impacted can allow contaminants and microbes to cause health hazards, structural degradation, or biohazard conditions. Muck-out cleaning addresses:

  • Debris
  • Solids
  • Organic Matter
  • Contaminants

Thorough Drying

Drying is extensive, utilizing dozens of tools and devices from our recovery inventory. Air movers are among the most readily used, with several machines daisy-chained together to limit power demands while providing maximum evaporation production. Basements require several centrifugal units directed at concrete masonry units that have begun to absorb the floodwater.

Despite the damage that flooding can cause your home, our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team’s fast response is crucial in saving time and money for customers. Call when disasters strike at (910) 319-0600.

Popular Electric Submersible Pumps for Hampstead Water Damage

4/14/2022 (Permalink)

Standing water in kitchen Malfunctioning appliances are a significant source of water damage each year. SERVPRO is always on call to restore your home.

Submersible Pumps Are Ideal for Various Water Damage Needs of Hampstead Homes

It is essential to get water removal services started in damaged homes as soon as possible. From burst pipes to malfunctioning appliances in the house, standing water is a significant threat to floors and wall systems. Extraction services utilize multiple pieces of equipment in our inventory, including submersible pumps and vacuums. This prompt action helps in other needed efforts to come, such as:

  • Water removal
  • Cleaning
  • Bulk material discarding
  • Structure drying

How Does an Electric Submersible Pump Work?

Many extraction devices are used in water damage restoration of Hampstead homes, but few are as readily used as electric submersible pumps. We utilize these because they are easy to maneuver and do not require much to operate. These units function from an onboard motor driving the pump and producing kinetic energy converted into pressure to pull water through the housing.

Limited Power Demands

There are several advantages to electric submersible pumps, the first being a limited power supply necessary to operate the device. Unlike gas-powered trash pumps in our inventory, electric submersible pumps run off a traditional 110 V outlet in a home without compromising the extraction capacities.

Quiet Operation

The quiet operation of these extraction units is another advantage for restoring homes where occupants have not been displaced. This process is a way that our restoration efforts do not impede more on customers' lives during water damage cleanup.

Deep Extraction Capable

Another advantage of choosing electric pumps is their ability to manage even considerable depths. Often operating at an output of several hundred gallons per minute of discharge, even significant deep extraction needs are manageable in a matter of hours.

Various tools are instrumental in removing and drying water and flood damage in your home. When several inches of standing water exists, submersible pumps are a wise choice. Give our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team a call when you need it at (910) 319-0600.

Surface Cleaning Mold Remediation for Jacksonville Properties

4/11/2022 (Permalink)

Heavy mold growth on ceiling One of the first steps in mold remediation is locating the moisture source. Our team can provide complete mold remediation.

Mold Remediation Begins in Jacksonville Residences with Surface Treatments

When you believe mold damage exists in your home, it is essential to act quickly. We have experienced remediation professionals trained in multiple mold removal and cleanup approaches. From surface treatment to repairs and reconstruction, we are a full-service team to help.

What Is Surface Treatment Remediation?

Surface cleaning and treatment, which uses antimicrobial products and mechanical action for removal, are preferred for mold damaged Jacksonville properties. This process is the least invasive approach for recovery after organisms spread throughout the property. We have several potent sporicidal and antimicrobial products within our inventory to destroy spores and microbes on contact.

Can Mechanical Actions Help?

Mechanical actions and agitation can amplify the desired result with surface cleaning. In this case, steps more effectively remove superficial mold damage. Some of the options we utilize include:

  • Hand Sanding – Gritty paper can clear mold on surfaces like wood framing without compromising the integrity of the materials.
  • Steel Wool – This abrasive material is ideal for clearing surface mold that has started to penetrate the surface.
  • Brushing – Hard bristled brushes remove more stubborn colonies.

Are More Abrasive Cleaning Options Needed?

Surface treatments are often insufficient to overcome the active colonization within a house. Although surface cleaning is the most desirable approach due to its non-invasiveness, many situations warrant a more abrasive and aggressive cleaning solution. Our IICRC trained team can provide strategies like dry ice blasting or even controlled demolition where necessary.

It is vital to quickly respond when you believe that mold damage exists in your home. Even when you cannot see the immediate effects of colonies, you can often identify the possibility of microbial growth through physical signs. When you suspect microbial damage, give our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team a call to help at (910) 319-0600.

What to Do with Items During Fire Damage Restoration in Hampstead Homes

2/18/2022 (Permalink)

6 matches burning Fire damages many things, including personal possessions. We have the knowledge to help you with the restore or replace decision.

SERVPRO Considers the Overall Effect Items Have on the Restoration of Your Hampstead Home

It takes different actions to complete fire damage restoration, including cleaning, resurfacing, and removing materials or items from a house based on the extent of the fire. The damages to items in your Hampstead home can be primarily characterized as charring and accumulation of residue deposits. You must decide what to do with the affected materials as you restore your property.

The choice made can influence the course of fire damage restoration at your Hampstead home. For example, choosing to dispose of items can reduce clutter, thus improving restoration speeds. Disposal is not viable in all instances since replacing items is costly. The decision by SERVPRO on item handling depends on the overall restoration goal.

For some items, the decision is straightforward:

  • Remove insulation with soot residues
  • Remove and dispose of any food in freezers and refrigerators
  • Protect metal and chrome materials with a thin oil film

Although the choice of action may seem arbitrary, it is based on specific aspects. For example, the decision to dispose of insulation rather than cleaning it is since it is cheaper. Therefore, disposal is the best approach for any other item in the house whose replacement cost is lower than restoration.

The heat and gases produced by fire affect food items, making them toxic to consumption after an incident. Removing and disposing of all canned food and emptying the fridge helps. Any other object in the house that might pose some danger after the restoration should be removed. HVAC filters fall in this category since they can recirculate residues back into the property affecting the indoor air quality.

Although the fire might not consume some items, they need protection during the restoration process. Soot residues corrode or stain metal and stone surfaces, respectively. Protecting such materials with a thin oil film prevents severe damage that would necessitate replacement.

With assistance from SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties, you do not have to worry about repairing fire damage. Call us at (910) 319-0600.

Materials to Prioritize During Water Removal from Topsail Beach Properties

2/10/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage surrounding exposed pipes in ceiling Small leaks can affect everything from drywall to flooring. SERVPRO has what it takes to handle all your restoration needs.

Professionals from SERVPRO Easily Identify Vulnerable Materials at Your Topsail Beach Home

Materials in a home react differently to water exposure. Therefore, when there is a water leak at your Topsail Beach home, you can expect a wide range of changes and damages. Knowing how vulnerable the materials in your house are to moisture action helps plan an appropriate response.

The timing of water removal from your Topsail Beach home matters because damage can result from direct or indirect water exposure. Since indirect damage takes time to develop, identifying vulnerable materials in good time creates the opportunity to take preventive steps. SERVPRO provides the necessary resources to expedite water extraction.

Highly vulnerable materials to moisture fall into many categories, including:

  • Hygroscopic material
  • Porous materials
  • Fabrics
  • Composite materials

Hygroscopic materials absorb moisture from the air and can develop problems over time. Limiting the humidity levels in a house is one way to protect such materials from significant damage. When our SERVPRO technicians expedite water extraction, we save hygroscopic materials by eliminating stagnation which increases humidity levels in a house from the constant evaporation.

Porous materials quickly absorb water when exposed. After absorption, changes start developing, including swelling, dyes running, and rusting, among others. Fabrics and wood exhibit signs of such changes faster than other materials. After the initial exposure, the material reaches an equilibrium point where it cannot absorb more, and then it starts losing moisture through evaporation, creating a different set of problems. Wood tends to warp, buckle or crack as it shrinks from moisture loss. Our SERVPRO teams can help expedite or slow down the drying rate to prevent permanent physical damage.

Some typical ways to manipulate the drying process include:

  • Using drying chambers
  • Dehumidification
  • Increasing air currents
  • Heating

Composite materials like laminated veneer lumber are made from pieces of material held together by adhesives. Moisture can cause expansion of the components or dilution of the glue, thus leading to irreversible damage.

SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties does a thorough preliminary evaluating of your property to identify vulnerable materials and thus use water removal procedures that resolve any issue, "Like it never even happened." Call us at (910) 319-0600.

SERVPRO Assists with Physical or Chemical Removal of Fire Residues from Jacksonville Homes

Fire does many things to a building, including consuming materials, depositing residues, and creating strong odors. Cleaning resolves several issues. However, you need to identify and use an appropriate method. With the assistance of a professional like SERVPRO, you can benefit from numerous ways when cleaning your house.

The need for different methods during fire and smoke cleanup in Jacksonville properties is necessary because combustion results in various types of residues, surfaces vary in texture, and materials have other physical properties. That is why SERVPRO technicians start by doing a thorough evaluation. Evaluating smoke damage also reveals what cleaning element to emphasize once restoration begins.

The four fundamental elements of cleaning are:

  • Temperature
  • Agitation
  • Time
  • Chemical action

Unique cleaning methods can enhance different cleaning elements, thus altering the outcome. For example, techniques like pressure washing surfaces increase the agitation levels stripping away significant or deeply embedded residues. Soot stains on surfaces such as countertops may be challenging to address through simple physical agitation. Introducing chemical action to the cleaning is necessary. SERVPRO technicians use products agents that dissolve or alter soils in other ways.

Typical ways chemical agents remove soils include:

  • Emulsifying oily soils
  • Bleaching
  • Dissolving into a solvent

Evacuating the soils removed from materials is also essential. If dry cleaning, vacuuming is an effective way to remove loose residues, thus ensuring they do not cause other problems such as lingering odors. When wet cleaning, rinsing involves using plain water. Our SERVPRO technicians also use special rinsing agents such as Fabric Rinse or Color Set to neutralize the effects of potent cleaning agents or stabilize dyes in fabrics.

SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties manages the challenges of fire and smoke damage, "Like it never even happened." You can reach us at (910) 319-0600 for timely services.

Is All Residential Mold Hazardous for Jacksonville Families?

1/21/2022 (Permalink)

Closeup of hand holding magnifying glass looking at mold Mold only needs organic matter as a food source and a supportive foundation for the growth and expansion of the colony.

Mold Removal Should be a Priority When Microbial Colonies Form in Jacksonville Homes

Overcoming the threats of mold and microbial growth in your home begins with understanding what kind of damage these organisms can do. Mold and fungal infestations are widely underappreciated for their destructive capabilities.

The Formation of Mold

Understanding how mold forms and its effect on your home can showcase your need for professional mold removal companies in Jacksonville residences. Persistently moist conditions create an environment welcoming naturally occurring mold spores to colonize on organic surfaces. Once this process starts, several removal practices must get started as soon as possible, like:

  • Surface cleaning
  • Aggressive mechanical actions
  • Abrasive cleaning/blasting
  • Controlled demolition

Potential Health Effects

Not all types of residential molds will cause health effects, but the damage has already become widespread when this determination can get made. For the sake of the impact on structural elements or other health effects, our IICRC Certified SERVPRO remediators should begin removal as soon as possible.

Destructive Behaviors of Microbial Growth

Active mold colonies require organic matter as a food source and supportive foundation for the growth and expansion of the organism. Therefore, materials like drywall that are already highly porous and easily damaged by changing conditions can be irreparably harmed by the formation of mold colonies. Instead of cleaning and reusing infested drywall, our professionals must often remove and replace it.

Mold can be destructive and damaging to area homes and commercial structures, making it imperative to have effective solutions available for remediation and removal when necessary. Our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team is specially trained and certified through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) in mold removal and microbial remediation. Call us today at (910) 319-0600.

Special Flooring Requires Fast Water Removal in Jacksonville Gyms

1/14/2022 (Permalink)

Closeup of water damaged linoleum tiles Water damaged flooring in your business? No worries! SERVPRO can handle water remediation for all types of floors.

Water Removal Services are Integral for the Rapid Response SERVPRO Provides Jacksonville Businesses

Gyms and recreational centers are a frequent addition to the neighborhoods of Jacksonville and its surrounding communities. When water damages threaten the structural integrity of these facilities or prevent proper function, our SERVPRO team can respond fast to help. We are leading restoration professionals who arrive with top industry tools for extraction, drying, and cleaning.

Gym and Exercise Floors

The rubber flooring typically used in exercise space can make water damage removal in Jacksonville facilities potentially easier to manage. These materials are mostly installed for shock absorbance and odor defense but lack the needed porosity for standing water to penetrate easily. Often water damage in these rooms requires surface cleanup and extraction only.

Court Flooring

Basketball courts and other athletic arenas constructed of this similar maple wood or natural hardwood material require special attention when affected by standing water. Removal of water on the surface might seem straightforward. Still, when moisture penetrates the finish on the court and gets into or underneath the plank, immediate drying steps are necessary to dry the court through capillary suction with tools like:

  • Polypropylene sheeting
  • Centrifugal air movers
  • Drying mats
  • Desiccant dehumidifiers

Linoleum Tilework

In many recreational complexes and multi-use gyms, linoleum tile gets installed in the hallways and communal areas. Linoleum is a relatively cheap glue-down option against concrete subflooring. Water exposure can loosen these adhered units and require them to be cleaned and reinstalled.

Various material types are impacted differently by direct exposure to standing water or flooding. Having a team educated in the necessary repairs and mitigation actions can get your doors open again more quickly. Our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team is here to help when you call (910) 319-0600.

Affected Materials During Crawlspace Flooding in Hampstead

1/7/2022 (Permalink)

Inside view of Crawlspace Crawlspaces are often the first to feel the affects of flooding. SERVPRO is always available to restore your home.

Crawlspaces of Hampstead Homes Can Become Quickly Damaged by Intruding Floodwater

While flooding is traumatic and hazardous to homes and businesses throughout our service area, the situation worsens until basic mitigation steps get taken, like water removal services. Extracting standing water from the crawlspace of area homes requires tools capable of operating around a confined space, such as:

  • Truck-mount extractors
  • Wet vacuums
  • Trash pumps

Supports for the House

Flood damage around Hampstead properties can have a direct impact on foundational materials. While some homes in the area feature slab foundations, when crawlspaces are present, the suspension of the house to support this designed area features needed structural elements to hold the home's weight. Whether poured concrete, masonry, wood, or other materials, continued exposure to floodwater and moisture can be destructive and damaging.

Impact on the Subflooring

Another considerable concern after exposure to floodwater is the rapid development of mold and microbial threats in this environment. Subflooring and supports for the main floor of the house are particularly vulnerable to this developing mold threat.

Preventing Recurrences of Prolonged Flood Damage

Even with the substantial efforts needed to remove floodwater and restore its harmful effects on the house, it is often most crucial to develop a permanent solution to avoid recurrences where possible. The best choice in this venture is crawlspace encapsulation which protects the exposed structural elements from water exposure and diverts intruding water away from the household.

Flooding can be a rapidly developing and severely threatening disaster, even if the water does not directly penetrate the living space of your house. Our SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties team can help area properties manage flood damage in crawlspaces to prevent more significant harm to the structure. Give us a call today at (910) 319-0600.

Can Trash Interfere with Restoration of Fire Damage in Jacksonville Homes?

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

Heavy smoke and soot damage on wall Fires leave debris and waste products behind. Debris management is an essential part of the fire damage restoration process.

By Improving Waste Management, SERVPRO Improves Speed and Safety During Fire Restoration

Since fire destroys materials fully or partially, heaps of waste can readily pile up at your home after an incident. It is vital to prioritize the proper debris management to ensure fire damage restoration proceeds as expected.

Trash and other waste materials can interfere with the process of fire damage restoration at your Jacksonville home in many ways, including creating safety hazards and obstructing restoration processes. SERVPRO incorporates trash management in every aspect of the restoration.

Various Steps Help Improve Waste Management at a Fire Loss Site, Including:

  • Providing the proper containers
  • Labeling unsalvageable materials
  • Segmenting work areas at the loss site

The fire restoration process should start with a thorough scope of the loss site. Taking some steps during the evaluation process helps in trash management later. Labeling any materials and contents deemed unsalvageable helps ease such management. Our SERVPRO technicians use tape or stickers to denote all unsalvageable materials quickly, thus better understanding what resources are necessary to remove or store the waste at the loss site.

Organizing wastes, especially after demolition, is essential. The best way to organize trash is to store it in containers. Our SERVPRO teams provide different storage resources, including dumpsters, trash bags, and portable storage units to handle various materials. For instance, fine residues are better contained in zipped trash bags, while more expansive materials such as ceiling or wall panel remnants are better dropped in dumpsters.

Another essential step to ensure waste materials do not interfere with restoration processes is dividing the loss site into different areas. For instance, one section can hold equipment, and another can temporarily store contents. One should also designate a space for holding the waste materials before they are removed from the property for disposal.

With the assistance from SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties during fire damage restoration, you do not have to worry about inconveniences of handling wastes. Call us at (910) 319-0600. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

What Is the Best Dehumidification Approach During Water Mitigation in Jacksonville Properties?

12/15/2021 (Permalink)

SERPRO drying mats being used to dry hardwood floors SERVPRO has all the equipment necessary to dry any scope of water damage your home incurs.

SERVPRO Ensures the Right Number and Positioning of Dehumidifiers for Maximum Effectiveness

Water mitigation is a complex process that requires many steps. Managing moisture is one of these crucial steps, and it takes sustained evaporation to evacuate all water from wet materials. Without dehumidification, it is difficult to maintain the appropriate evaporation rates since once the moisture escapes from wet materials, it saturates in the air.

Planning for proper dehumidification is essential during water mitigation in Jacksonville homes. Otherwise, it might be impossible to avail sufficient resources. One advantage is that professionals, like SERVPRO, have access to is proprietary software that helps recommend the appropriate dehumidification power needed. Using the DryBook™ App, a technician only provides the project details like the approximate area affected to get a specific number of Pints Per Day that need to be removed through dehumidification. The PPD number determines the type, size, and the number of required dehumidifiers.

Other Factors are Essential Apart from Identifying the Necessary Dehumidification Capacity, Including:

  • Proper placement of dehumidifier units
  • The appropriate direction of dehumidifier exhaust
  • Providing appropriate power sources and drains

Each property presents unique challenges concerning dehumidification. For instance, the power source can be an issue, especially since other equipment such as air movers may already be plugged into outlets, thus forcing an awkward placement of dehumidifier units.

Our SERVPRO technicians inspect the property to establish the best power source and drain options, such as sinks. If there are none in the wet areas, we provide extension cords. We can also use wheeled trash cans to drain the water from dehumidifiers. These simple steps ensure the appropriate placement of the units for optimal drying. Directing the warm air exhausted by dehumidifiers correctly can also help improve the drying rate. Our SERVPRO technicians aim it towards wet materials or an air mover.

SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties manages all aspects of water mitigation professionally. Call us at (910) 319-0600. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

What Is the Best Approach for Mold Remediation in Concealed Areas of Your Hampstead Property?

12/8/2021 (Permalink)

Mold growing on wall inside children’s closet Mold can develop out of sight, where it is hard to spot. SERVPRO knows how to locate and remediate hidden mold.

SERVPRO Relies on Controlled Demolition and Specialized Cleaning Techniques to Manage Mold

Mold development is typically easy to identify since patches and stains are readily visible on surfaces. However, mold also develops out of sight, where it is hard to spot and even harder to remove. Typical examples of such areas include crawlspaces and wall cavities, especially behind bathtubs and sinks. You might need professional assistance to address mold damage in hidden areas of your Hampstead home.

The main challenge when mold remediation in Hampstead homes involves hidden areas is the limited reach. If the contamination is hidden behind building materials such as wall panels or ceiling tiles, demolition is the only solution. If the growth affects a porous material or tiny spaces between materials, a specialized removal method that can penetrate the small openings is essential. SERVPRO is well versed in doing controlled demolitions and using specialized cleaning techniques like dry ice blasting.

Benefits of Dry Ice Blasting Include:

  • Safe removal of mold from tight spaces of delicate areas
  • Does not introduce moisture to contaminated areas
  • Does not introduce new residues

It is easy to cause unnecessary structural damage when dealing with hidden mold, thus increasing costs and prolonging the remediation process. Opening walls and other areas can also release harmful residues, exposing people in the vicinity. Therefore, any demolition to remove mold residues or heavily deteriorated materials requires sufficient control.

One of the crucial steps for controlled demolition is establishing containment since it helps limit residues from spreading even when teardown or cleaning is aggressive. Aggressive actions include using cutting tools to remove materials or cleaning methods such as sanding.

Establishing Mold Containment Takes:

  • Setting up plastic sheets to create containment barriers
  • Separating contained areas into distinct sections, including decontamination and clean rooms
  • Establishing negative air pressure within contained areas

SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties can help you with any needed resources to complete mold remediation. Call us at (910) 319-0600. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Why Is Muck-Out Part of Flood Restoration?

Storm flood damage in Jacksonville often calls for the removal of debris and other solid matter brought in by the intruding water. Our team targets debris and mud with muck-out service to help reduce contaminants and pathogenic threats, thus improving restoration and cleaning times.

Restoration and Contents Cleaning

Any items exposed to contaminated floodwater must get cleaned or disposed of, depending on the ability to salvage. To protect and restore your belongings, our team thoroughly assesses everything to determine restoration viability. We may utilize pack-out services to move items off-site for cleaning to achieve our restoration goals in some situations. When we do so, your contents and personal belongings will go through:

  • Color-fastness testing
  • Surface cleaning
  • Thorough drying
  • Sanitizing
  • Deodorizing
  • Safe storage

Why is Controlled Demolition Used?

Various building materials exposed to contaminated floodwater may have to get removed and replaced with the help of our meticulous controlled demolition services. We may perform flood cuts of drywall to remove saturated materials, replace them with brand new drywall and refinish to make it look “Like it never even happened.” Drill holes may also get used to drain water from behind walls to thoroughly dry and remove all hidden moisture.

SERVPRO Helps Jacksonville Property Owners Save Money with Trusted Fire Damage Cleanup and Restoration

The fire damage recovery process can be a long one, but house fire cleanup may not take as long when you call in the help of skilled technicians. While it may seem as though you can save money with a DIY restoration, this is a situation where you can do more harm than good. It is always better to call in a team with proven methods, training, and equipment to restore your Jacksonville home to pre-fire condition.

SERVPRO wants homeowners and property managers to know some of the best ways to prepare for your fire damage restoration project in Jacksonville:

There is a timeline when it comes to smoke damage to your home from a fire:

  • Within a few hours, discoloration gets deeper with hard-to-remove stains. These stains can sink deep into furniture finish, countertops, and tile grout.
  • Within the first couple of days, discoloration settles in on household items, appliances, and walls. Flooring and furniture finish may also become so damaged at this time that they must get replaced rather than restored.

Time is essential when it comes to smoke remediation, which is why SERVPRO is available 24/7 to arrive at your property within hours of your initial call. We send a crew armed with the latest technology to form an assessment and a detailed plan to handle the fire and smoke damage to achieve the best results. SERVPRO Anticipates a Broad Spectrum of Problems when Delivering Water Removal Services

Flash floods can fill up your Jacksonville home with tons of water almost instantly. However, removing the water and resolving the other problems that develop is rarely easy. Having the right strategy is essential for the right outcome, cost-effectiveness, and general convenience.

Flash flood damage at your Jacksonville property can affect vast sections since the groundwater can rise to any height from a few inches to a couple of feet. Floodwaters are categorized as black water since the level of contamination is high. Our SERVPRO technicians expect various materials in the property, including drywall panels, insulation, and floor coverings such as carpets, to be thoroughly doused with organic and chemical contaminants.

The Crucial Restoration Processes Include:

  • Biohazard remediation
  • Sewage cleanup
  • Rodent cleanup services

Any meaningful restoration work starts after the water recedes in and around the structure. It is possible to find that rodents or other small animals had taken refuge in the house, causing additional problems. However, our SERVPRO teams are prepared to handle such floodwater challenges.

Venturing into the contaminated house also poses risks. Apart from wearing protective equipment, our technicians also take steps such as spraying EPA-registered decontaminants directly into the water to combat contaminants.

Removing all unsalvageable materials is also essential for various reasons, including maintaining the structural integrity of your home and restoring sanitary conditions. Our SERVPRO technicians make flood cuts a few inches above the identified water line, creating the space to remove wall materials. We also strip off carpets, pads, and any other unsalvageable floor materials.

SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties uses the latest techniques to handle flood damage, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (910) 319-0600.

What Is Unique About Water Damage Restoration in Jacksonville Homes Involving Fabrics?

Gray sofa with gold pillows on taupe shag rug Do you know how to clean water damaged textiles? SERVPRO does! We are available for all your water damage restoration needs.

SERVPRO Helps Manage Delicate Aspects of Water Clean Up for Safety and Satisfactory Outcomes

Whenever there is a water leak or other spike in moisture at your Jacksonville property, various materials are vulnerable to damage. Fabrics are vulnerable to multiple problems, including bleeding, staining, and shrinkage from the moisture exposure or the restoration processes.

Dealing with fabrics is common during water damage restoration since Jacksonville homes have many fabric items, including floor materials, window covers, and even furniture. The fabrics differ in many ways, such as the type of fiber, weave, and level of colorfastness. SERVPRO water restoration technicians receive training that equips them with the knowledge to identify potential problems through observation or pre-testing materials.

The Type of Care Needed for Fabrics Depend on Whether Restoration Involves:

  • Sewage cleanup
  • Water cleanup
  • Water damage remediation

Before restoring any water damaged fabric, our SERVPRO technicians observe the physical properties such as color and weave. Some colors such as black, red, green, and blue are highly likely to bleed. Tapestries and brocades with a jacquard weave are also potential bleeders. Pre-testing with spotting agents, pre-sprays, and cleaning solutions helps confirm vulnerable materials to ensure we take the proper precautions.

Shrinking is another concern, especially for upholstery items. Natural fibers like cotton, rayon, wool, linen, and silk tend to shrink when wet. Our SERVPRO technicians look for alternative ways such as dry cleaning to restore such materials—alternatively, the use of minimal moisture when wet cleaning helps.

Other Steps for Safe Restoration Include:

  • Applying cleaning agents along the grain to avoid distorting fibers
  • Placing non-metallic screen on fabrics to control agitation
  • Using low pH cleaning agents

SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties strives to save more materials during water damage restoration. Call us at (910) 319-0600. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

SERVPRO Performs Mold Inspection to Contents and the Structure Ensuring the Best Outcomes from Restoration

When you notice signs such as spots or patches on surfaces, you may suspect an underlying mold problem. You may be conflicted about whether to involve professional mold remediation companies or try fighting the problem independently. However, involving professionals can improve the outcome by a significant margin.

In most cases, the signs you see on surfaces do not reveal the extent of the infestation. Mold remediation companies help Hampstead homeowners understand the problem they face by carrying out a series of tests. Our SERVPRO technicians can check for hidden moisture using thermal cameras, thermo-hygrometers, and penetrative moisture meters. We also analyze how far the mold colonies spread by drilling small exploratory holes on walls, cabinets, and other cavities—identifying the areas to focus on during remediation.

With Help from Mold Specialists, you do not Have to Worry About:

  • Basement mold remediation
  • Bathroom mold removal
  • Attic mold
  • Black mold damage repairs

Dealing with Fungi and Other Microbial Masses Requires Various Processes, Including:

  • Mild surface cleaning
  • Aggressive cleaning
  • Controlled demolition
  • Moisture and odor management

Before starting the mold remediation processes, our SERVPRO teams take steps to create order. For instance, we set up a staging area to hold all the equipment we use in the restoration. When doing move-outs, we evaluate the contents thoroughly then group them based on size and type of damage.

Mold infestation can be mild or advanced, thus requiring different remediation approaches for the correct result. Our SERVPRO professionals use a wide range of cleaning processes, including HEPA vacuuming, damp wiping, wire brushing, or soda blasting.

What Hampstead Flood Damage Does to Your Carpet

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

Two girls lying on carpet; fireplace in background. Flooding can damage carpeting. SERVPRO knows how to safely dry and restore carpeting and your home.

Flood Damage in Hampstead Can be Destructive for Carpeted Floors

Flood restoration projects often spend more time on flooring materials than anything else. Underneath inches of standing water, most types of residential flooring start to suffer.

One of the types of flooring most heavily impacted by Hampstead flood damage is carpet. Carpets come in many different styles and materials, but all of them are multi-layered and highly vulnerable to flooding. The top layer of carpet might be made from any material – regardless of the type, this layer often commands most of our attention. It is the most expensive material and the easiest to restore rather than replace. Below, carpet pads and tack strips can quickly degrade when inundated with rain stormwater. We try to separate the layers to promote faster drying and decrease the chance of mold growth. If the waterlogged carpets are from contaminated groundwater, then the only option is to discard them.

Not all floods affect carpeted areas. Some of our damage calls involve a simple leaking roof from storms or floodwaters that only enter a garage. The first person to arrive at your home, the SERVPRO inspector, determines the risks and damages posed by the floodwaters and, when carpeting is threatened, prioritizes water extraction in that area. We prepare to treat carpet in all our calls but most commonly handle it during:

  • Basement Flooding Cleanup
  • Ceiling leaks in bedrooms and living areas
  • Burst pipes
  • Windows left open during storms

For fast and professional damage mitigation services, call SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties 24/7 at (910) 319-0600.

Keeping Weather in Mind During Jacksonville Water Mitigation

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO vehicle parked in front of commercial building. The humidity outside affects the drying plan for water damage inside buildings. SERVPRO knows how to dry and restore your home.

Water Mitigation Projects in Jacksonville Can be Tricky, Rain or Shine

Our ideal water damage remediation strategy hinges around a fast and effective response to the initial incident. The more moisture we can remove in the first few hours and days, the less time and money restorations eventually cost.

One of the most challenging aspects of any Jacksonville water mitigation project is controlling moisture and humidity in the area. Weather can help or harm our efforts in different and sometimes conflicting ways. For example, when the summer sun shines and temperatures rise, these conditions help facilitate faster drying in your home. On the other hand, if that warm day also experiences high relative humidity, SERVPRO technicians may be forced to adapt and use alternative drying strategies. And, in some cases, the weather may become too warm, outpacing our dehumidifiers. To compensate for these effects, we monitor environmental conditions closely during:

  • Flood restoration
  • Emergency services water damage
  • Basement Flooding Cleanup

By considering humidity, temperature, and air movement together, SERVPRO technicians develop a plan to arrange and run water-removing equipment for maximum effect. The exact ratio of dehumidifiers, air movers, and water extractors used in a home can be challenging to determine. Only the years of experience present in a SERVPRO team can consistently use these tools correctly.

The water cleanup process begins with the SERVPRO restorers testing the water if deemed necessary. Water residing for more than 24 hours on your Jacksonville property has the potential to become contaminated. SERVPRO experts use a variety of antimicrobials to decontaminate before starting the water removal and eventual damage repairs.

The next phase is water extraction using a wet vacuum, truck-mounted extractors, and other equipment. Any ruined part of the structure, such as sheetrock that has wicked a lot of moisture, is removed by carefully controlled demolition, preserving the undamaged portion of the house.

Finally, the residual moisture from your flood-damaged Jacksonville home is eliminated using dehumidifiers and air-moving units before completing the restoration process.

Why is SERVPRO the First Choice of Jacksonville Residents for Fire Damage Restoration?

Located on the New River banks, Jacksonville is known for Camp Lejeune, a US marine corps training facility and a Navy base. The military established the camp in 1941, and the city's population exploded since then. Before founding the post, Jacksonville had had only 800 residents; by 2019, the number increased to over 70,000. The town also holds a record for being the youngest city in the country, partly due to a significant military presence.

The vicinity to the coast and Croatan National forest makes Jacksonville a perfect vacation spot for tourists from across the country. The sapphire waters of the New River are a sight to behold while you are in the city. Picturesque Atlantic beaches are just a drive away, where you can bask in the sun and relax. Some of the best beaches to check out while you are in Jacksonville are:

  • Hammocks beach state part- Located near Crystal Coast, the park covers a vast area of about 1600 acres. One of the most fun activities to do while in the park is kayak to the nearby Bear Island, about 4 miles from the shore. It consists of an extensive dune system. You can camp here, but most of the island is still undisturbed and wild.
  • Topsail Island Beaches- The gorgeous barrier beaches of the island are perfect for hiking during the sunset or sunrise. Topsail Island is a sea turtle sanctuary. According to folklore, pirate ships sailed the seas in this area during ancient times, and the infamous pirate Blackbeard hid his treasure on the Topsail island.
  • Wrightsville Beach- Another pristine beach near Jacksonville, there are a ton of things to do here. From paddle-boarding to kayaking, there are a ton of activities for both adults and children alike on this beach.
  • Onslow Beach- Located between Intercoastal Waterway and the Atlantic, the beach is open to all authorized Department of Defense ID cardholders.

Jacksonville Residents Trusts SERVPRO with House Fire Cleanup of Their Property

Witnessing fire and smoke damage at your Jacksonville home can be overwhelming. Looking at all the damage, you might find it difficult to determine how and where the restoration process begins. The first thing to do in such a situation is to call in the experts. SERVPRO's certified technicians can help you round the clock to manage the situation and minimize the loss.

Cleaning residue during a fire and smoke restoration and cleanup is a difficult task. Different types of residues require different approaches. The most common types of residue left after the fire and smoke damage fits into one of the following three categories:

  • Dry smoke residue is often the easiest to clean and is formed by burning natural substances such as wood.
  • Wet smoke residue- Difficult to clean and is formed by burning synthetic material, including plastics and polymers.
  • Protein smoke residue- Formed due to the burning of proteins such as meat and fish. It is challenging to clean and requires deodorization as well.

SERVPRO techs apply a different approach for each of these residues to return your Jacksonville home to "Like it never even happened." Call SERVPRO of Pender / West Onslow Counties at (910) 319-0600. We are here 24/7 to serve you.

Mold Damage Tips

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

This is mold in a cabinet for an ongoing sink leak.

Mold occurs when there is an excess amount of moisture or water present and can grow on virtually anything. Therefore, the purpose of mold remediation is to correct the moisture problem and to rid the structure of moldy or contaminated materials. This will prevent human exposure to the mold and any further damage to the building materials or furnishings.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  1. Stay out of affected areas.
  2. Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  3. Contact SERVPRO of Pender/West Onslow to schedule an evaluation for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Do not touch or disturb the mold.
  • Do not blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Do not attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Do not spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

If you have mold in your home, it's important that you have the professionals at SERVPRO of Pender/West Onslow handle the cleanup or remediation. The process of cleaning up mold can be complicated and dangerous if you are not trained to do the job properly.

Is your residence ready for hurricane season?

Hurricane

Its that time of year again to make sure you and your clients are ready for hurricane season. Starting May 1-November 30 hurricanes and tropical storms can make landfall. Below SERVPRO of Pender/West Onslow has put together some information to help you and your clients be ready for when the storms hit. SERVPRO of Pender/West Onslow are always HERE TO HELP.

PREPARING YOUR HOME

Keep trees trimmed at all times in preparation for unpredictable weather.

Probably the most important thing you can do in preparation for a hurricane is protect your windows and doors. It is so vital to put up shutters. Whether they are commercial, store bought or plywood, it is vital to get them on the windows and doors prior to a hurricane.

Also remove anything that is outside and bring it in. Things such are yard decorations, chairs, tables, umbrellas should all be brought in. If you have an outdoor living space, you should pack up and remove everything that you can. Anything left outside becomes a potential projectile.

Make sure you fill up your vehicles with gas prior to the hurricane. It is wise to do this several days in advance since the closer the hurricane gets, the more likely the gas stations will run out of gas. The same goes for cash. Get your necessary cash a few days ahead of time.

So start now and be prepared. The last thing anyone wants, or needs is a natural disaster or storm but none of us have control over mother nature. Hurricane preparedness is a responsibility to yourself and your family. Most of the items will last for many years to come. Important - don’t dispose of plywood shutters after the season. Place them in the garage or attic for future years (so many times I’ve seen the plywood from windows at curb for garbage. So much money wasted.)

10 ways to prepare your home for hurricane season

Review your insurance policies

Consider flood insurance

Take an inventory of your property

Secure and seal your roof

Add roof straps

Secure porches & carports

Lighting Facts

Lightning around north topsail beach

Lightning is one of the leading causes of weather-related fatalities. Though the odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are only around 1 in 500,000, some factors can put you at greater risk for being struck.

Here are a few lightning safety tips:

  • Be aware. Check the forecast before participating in outdoor activities. If it calls for thunderstorms, postpone your trip or activity, or make sure adequate safe shelter is available.
  • Go indoors. Remember the phrase, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” Find a safe enclosed shelter when you hear thunder. Safe shelters include homes, offices, shopping centers, and hard-top vehicles with the windows rolled up.
  • Avoid windows, doors, porches and concrete. Do not lie on concrete floors and avoid leaning on concrete walls. Lighting can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.
  • Avoid water. Do not bathe, shower, wash dishes, or have any other contact with water during a thunderstorm because lightning can travel through a building’s plumbing.

Preparing Your Coastal Carolina Home for Winter

The weather is cooling off; the leaves are changing, and the holidays are quickly approaching. All these things mean that it’s time to make that list of winter preparations for your home and start checking them off! We have compiled a list of things that will need attention whether you are staying in your coastal home through the winter or if you are leaving. You should plan to complete this process in late November to early December.

  • General Exterior Tips
    • Clean the gutters and downspouts—This is essential because ice build up on leaves and debris can freeze and cause excess weight that will add weight and volume that can increase the potential for damage.
    • Inspect Siding, Flashing, Windows, Doors and Roof—This is a great opportunity to do a visual inspection of the siding for cracks and gaps. Check your flashing for leaks and your roof for missing shingles. Not only will this prevent damages, but you can fill those gaps with caulk to help keep the interior of your home well insulated. Check the weather stripping around your doors, and on a windy day see if any air is entering your home around your windows. Fill any gaps with caulk to prevent drafts that will increase your heating bill.
    • Winterize your Air Condition Unit/Remove window AC Units- Now is the perfect time to clean the condensing unit (the big air conditioning unit outside your house) of the AC System. Remove any large pieces of debris and use a high-pressure hose to rinse any residual debris off the blade and the condensing coils. You may want to consider purchasing a breathable waterproof AC cover to protect the unit and add longevity to the unit.
    • Trim any tree limbs, dead trees and foliage against your home—Ice and snow can weigh down the limbs of dead trees and make them fall, which could cause significant damage to your home, fences, or car. You may be comfortable doing this on your own, but you may want to consider hiring a professional. Additionally, you should trim any foliage that is up against the home. Foliage allows moisture to sit up against the foundation and siding of your home for prolonged periods of wet weather.
    • Prepare your outside space—Drain hose pipes, cover or bring in outdoor furniture and consider giving your deck a fresh coat of weather protectant sealant. Leaving your furniture outside and uncovered will deteriorate the quality quicker as well as the potential for those items to be damaged. You should also winterize your sprinkler system at this juncture—turn off the water supply, and blow out the sprinkler lines to prevent freezing, cracking or bursting.
    • Inspect all water pipes that may be vulnerable—Insulate any exposed water or drainpipes in attics, crawlspaces and outside walls. Wrapping the pipes with foam. Insulate any exterior outlets and switch plates with foam insulation.
  • General Interior Tips
    • Flush out and insulate your water heater—Open the drain valve located near the bottom of your water heater to let the sediment run out and keep it functioning optimally. Insulate your hot water tank with an insulating blanket to increase the efficiency of the water heater.
    • Test/maintenance on Heating system—Set the thermostat to an unusually high number (80 degrees)-Once you hear the furnace turn on, check to make sure that warm air is

blowing out of the vents. If necessary, schedule maintenance. Replace your air filters. This is also a good time to vacuum vents and baseboard heaters to avoid the burning dust smell. If you were considering buying a programmable thermostat, this may be a good opportunity to take that plunge as well. You can set the thermostat to not heat the home when no one is there, and some are even controllable remotely with your phone. Refuel any propane tanks necessary for usage. Test your carbon monoxide detector to ensure it is functioning properly.

  • Chimney maintenance—Before using your fireplace for the first time, make sure to inspect it for any debris or nests. Open and close the flue to verify that it is functioning properly. Inspect the bricks and mortar joints of a brick chimney and have any openings repaired. It is also worth considering hiring a chimney sweep to properly clean the chimney.

If you are going to be vacating your property, there are additional precautions that need to be taken:

  • Vacant Home Tips:
    • Prepare and protect your plumbing—Completely turn of the water supply, drain your pipes by opening all faucets and flushing all toilets to empty the water from the tank and bowl. At this juncture you could hire a plumber to blow compressed air through the pipes to ensure they’re completely drained. If you do not drain the pipes keep your thermostat at 55 degrees which will keep the interior temperature-the floor and wall cavities where the piping is located above freezing temperatures.
    • Prevent against pests—Clean your home thoroughly, including refrigerators, freezers and oven. Do a thorough inspection of all windows, doors and chimneys to be sure that they are sealed completely and capped to prevent intrusion.
    • Routine Maintenance—This is a good time to perform the routine maintenance on the appliances in your home such as your HVAC, and an electrical inspection if the home is older. Additionally, cleaning out gutters and visual inspection of the roof as well as inspecting the weather stripping and insulation of the doors and windows will protect the home. It is also important to remove any dead trees or overhanging limbs that are close to the home to prevent against damages from ice or blustery wind gusts.

Winterizing your home will likely prevent costly repairs and escalated deterioration of your property. A little bit of time and sweat equity is all it takes to reduce these risks.

Does your Coastal North Carolina home have a Mold Problem?

10/8/2019 (Permalink)

In Coastal North Carolina, mold can grow and begin to spread in as little as 24 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation. Give us a call at 910-319-0600 for a free inspection.

Preparing Your Children for Emergency Situations

9/16/2019 (Permalink)

Week 3, Sept 15- of FEMA"s Month of National Preparedness is Youth Preparedness.

Youth Preparedness

Preparing your kids with what to expect and how to plan for an emergency is essential to mitigate their fears as well as prevent confusion. When discussing the plan be sure to include what to do if they are at home as well as if they are away from home at school or at extracurricular activities. ??The first topic that should be covered with your children is communication. Just like with any other relationship—teacher and parent, student and teacher, boss and employee, spouses, friends communication is key! Be sure that they are comfortable sending text messages, that they know the emergency contact numbers and that they know how to use the emergency features on their cellular devices. Next be sure to make sure that the school records have the correct contact information for the people who you want to be their emergency contacts should they be unable to reach you. When you have your family meeting make sure that you discuss who is on the list with your children so that they know who they can expect to pick them up in an emergency situation.

The next topic that should be reviewed with your children should be the emergency items that need to be taken with them in the event of an emergency. Any medications, pertinent medical instructions, supplies or documents that they will need should they be displaced should be listed and an emergency kit should be put together.

Finally you should have a family meeting where you discuss the plan and role play different scenarios that could happen so that they can familiarize themselves with the situations. Emergency situations can be very stressful for children and the best way to prepare them is to walk them through all the possible scenarios and arm them with as much information as you can so that they feel informed.

Saving for a Disaster

8/30/2019 (Permalink)

FEMA has declared September the National Preparedness Month.

FEMA has declared September the National Preparedness Month. We will discuss the ways that are most important for local families to prepare for emergencies, and how to set you and your family up for the least impact possible. Simple things like taking photos of critical documents, having small amounts of cash on hand, and being sure you have appropriate coverage with home, life and property insurances can drastically change the outcome of any disaster situation. A huge part of planning for a disaster is financial preparedness.

Families in any income bracket can experience detrimental setbacks following a disaster or serious emergency. It is imperative to setup a small savings account and begin saving for a crisis event. Additionally you can complete an Emergency Financial First Aid Kit which will have you gather all of the important documents in order to complete it. Once you have completed it, you will have everything in one place. It is also important to review the deductibles for all of your insurance policies. Some policies have a flat rate deductible such as $3,500, while others will have a percentage based on the home’s insured value, 2-3%. Be sure that you understand the coverage. Not all types of events are covered by one policy. For example your wind and hail policy will not cover ground water intrusion and you will need additional flood insurance for those instances. This flood insurance can be purchased through the National Flood Insurance Program. This is important as many local residents found out during Hurricane Florence.

Each member of your family will need to have the proper identification with them should you need to apply for FEMA financial aid following the disaster. When gathering and securing your documents make sure you have:
Photo ID to prove identity of house hold members such as-

*Birth certificate to maintain or re-establish contact with family members

*Social security card to apply for FEMA disaster assistance
*Military service ID or record
*Pet ID tags

You will also need the following legal and financial documents to maintain your records.
*Housing payments to identify financial records and obligations
*Insurance policies to re-estabish financial accounts
*Sources of income to maintain payments and credit
*Tax statements to provide contact information for financial and legal providers & apply for FEMA disaster assistance.

Be sure to store all of your documents in a water proof and fire proof container.

Grease Fire

7/24/2019 (Permalink)

Grease fire DO's and DON'T'S are essential!

There you are, cooking up an amazing dinner. You've got your sweetheart coming over and you are singing along to that amazing Adele song, belting out the emotion and you look over and see.... FLAMES?! That was not what you planned. What now?!!?

At any point during the cooking process, a grease fire can occur. These fires can quickly become devastating and potentially fatal.

A fire only requires THREE components to burn: oxygen, heat, and fuel. The safest and smartest way to kill a grease fire is by removing one of the components. Oxygen will be the fastest to remove because it takes time for the electric burner to cool down and it’s not safe to remove the fuel (grease).

Here are the CORRECT steps to kill a grease fire:

  1. Turn off the electricity supply to the stove top.
  2. Eliminate the oxygen supply.

        - Put on kitchen mitts so you don’t burn yourself

        - Grab the lid that fits the pot/pan and slide it across the top of the pot/pan

          Or

        -  If you do not have a lid, you can use a cookie sheet and repeat the step above

  1. Call the fire department.
  2. Call SERVPRO and we can come clean your mess up and make it look “Like it never even happened”.

Alternative methods:

        - Fire extinguisher

        - Pour a large amount of baking soda on the flames

        - Use a soaking wet cloth, and carefully drape the cloth over the pot/pan

Here is what NOT to do:

  1. Use water to put out the flames.

         - Water is heavier than oil; therefore the water will sink to the bottom. This causes the water to rapidly heat up, and an explosion to occur.

  1. Swat the flames with a cloth
  2. Throw flour on the flames (flour is combustible)
  3. Move the pot/pan (not even to another stove burner)

If the heat gets to be unbearable--get out of the kitchen and call 911.

Share the Table's Topsail Turtle Blast

They will be resting up for their next race August 1st! Please consider adopting a race turtle to help feed our neighbors in need!

Share the Table is a faith based community Food Ministry supported by nine churches within Pender and Onslow, NC counties. Dawn and her team at Share the Table work incredibly hard all year to feed the people in our community who have to make the heartbreaking decision between food and other basic family needs. This organization helps families through their free community meal, food pantry and school backpack programs. Each week they are feeding over 950 Pender and Onslow county residents.

Each year Share The Table puts on their Topsail Turtle Blast to raise funds for their financial needs throughout the year. The proceeds go to stock the food pantry, aid in the soup kitchen and fill the school food back pack program. Participants adopt turtles for $5.00 a piece and on race day (weather permitting) the Rubber Turtles will race down water slides in three heats with the top prize of $500! There will be plenty for the family to do as well that day with food vendors, music and other kid activities on site at the Topsail Moose Lodge beginning at 5:30.

Now, if you wanted to contribute to Dawn and her incredible team by adopting a turtle and cannot attend the Topsail Turtle Blast on race day, you do not have to be present to win. If you want to make donations to Share The Table, follow the link below to see the schedule for those times.

Accuracy of Hurricane Forecasting

7/1/2019 (Permalink)

A representation of the average NHC 48-hour track errors for the forecast of a storm centered over Pensacola, Florida, in 1990 (blue) and today (red).

Our area was one of if not the hardest hit areas in the region during Hurricane Florence in September of 2018. When forecasters originally released the path of the monster storm, Florence was expected to make landfall as a Category 4 storm. However, over the coming days the National Hurricane Center (NHC) would downgrade her to a Category 1 as she made landfall just south of Wrightsville Beach on September 14 with sustained winds of 90mph. The states of North Carolina and South Carolina had already declared states of emergency and ordered many mandatory evacuations. When the storm hovered over the area and dumped nearly 40 inches of rain it became the wettest tropical cyclone recorded in the Carolinas and the eighth wettest overall in the contiguous United States (KTVQ Billings News/NHC Report May 4, 2019). Despite Florence’s weakened status of Category 1, the high pressure ridge that stalled the storm out over our state for the following days caused the major inland rivers-Neuse, Eno, Cape Fear and Lumber to breach their banks and flood the surrounding areas. The majority of Pender County and the city of Wilmington were entirely cutoff from the mainland and left many communities without food and gas for multiple days. At least 54 deaths were attributed to the storm. Many were left wondering after such a catastrophe, how accurate are the forecasts that we are given prior to a storm making landfall?

The National Hurricane Center is a component of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction which is located at Florida International University in Miami Florida. The first hurricane warning services began in the 1870’s in Cuba. As technology changed and the ability to track the storms became more accessible, the government began to invest more money and time into forecasting the deadly storms. The NHC began formally in the 1950’s using aircraft to study tropical cyclones and to carry out experiments on mature hurricanes. In 1956 a National Hurricane Information Center was established in Miami Florida. In the last 60+ years it has changed locations and the name has shifted slightly, but the main goal has remained “to save lives, mitigate property loss, and improve economic efficiency by issuing the best watches, warnings, forecasts, and analyses of hazardous tropical weather and by increasing understanding of these hazards.” (https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutintro.shtml)

The first known recorded forecast was in 1954, with 24 hour predictions of a tropical cyclone’s track were made. (https://noaanhc.wordpress.com/) In the following years, the NHC has broadened the window with which the forecast is made in by releasing a hurricane season forecast for the season in May of each year. With the research assistance of NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), part of whose mission is to understand and predict changes in climate and weather, the NHC can issue an outlook with 70% confidence that hurricane activity will fall within predicted ranges and that they are accurate 70% of the time. The preseason outlook is determined as close to the beginning of Hurricane Season as possible, June 1, to ensure that it accurately accounts for changes in major climate phenomenon’s such as El Nino/La Nina cycle, Atlantic sea surface temperatures and the West African monsoons-which was the origin of Hurricane Florence. So, are the forecasts more accurate?
According to the NHC, there has been a steady reduction in the track errors over time, with average errors in the current decade about 30-40% smaller than they were in the 2000’s and about half of the size or less than they were in the 1990’s. (https://noaanhc.wordpress.com/)  Obviously, the main reason the tracks are more accurate is technology, more specifically the satellites and the drones that are able to fly into the eye of the storm to observe the behaviors. Additionally the amount and quality of data available to input in the various model systems help paint an initial picture of the atmosphere and have increased dramatically in the last 20 to 30 years. These factors along with many other advancements in technology have made vast improvements in what scientists and meteorologists are able to predict.

For now we can expect that the errors will continue to decrease, but at some point the predictions will plateau. For now though, be sure that you have some kind of notification system on your phone or at your home to keep you and your family safe in the likelihood of any weather event.

It's getting to be that time of year again, and every family and business needs a plan of action in case another storm comes through. As most of us are still recovering from Hurricane Florence, it's hard to believe that Hurricane Season is upon us again. Your plan should include an emergency supply kit, personal information, important documents, evacuation plans with escape routes, and a communication plan with emergency contact information.

Your personal written plan should include all pertinent and proper information and be easily accessible. It should include a designated meeting place for family members, a list of family contacts, emergency phone numbers, an inventory of valuable household goods, and any important documents. You should also have a first aid kit, and a disaster supply kit that is well equipped with enough food, water, bedding, clothing, toiletries, pet items, tools and batteries to last several days. It should also include flashlights, battery operated radios, children's activities, matches, and a plastic container for important documents. Make sure your cars gas tank is filled up, and you have enough cash on hand.

A family communication plan is an important part of being prepared when an emergency occurs, because family members may be at work or school. Some key items to include for family members are, out of town contacts and email addresses. Having an out of town contact enables families to have one key person to check in with when local communication is affected or disabled. Email addresses will provide another form of communication electronically if phone lines are affected. All family members should carry emergency contact cards with pertinent information and phone numbers in case of a disaster.

Businesses also need to take precautions when preparing for a hurricane. They should be aware of how their company functions and what materials, equipment, and procedures they need in order to operate their business. Businesses need to plan what to do in case their office is not accessible, develop a plan to run their business from a different location, and identify operations critical to survival and recovery. Statistics show that 50% of businesses that are impacted by a disaster never re-open. We are here to make sure that isn't the case for you.

The best action a family or business can take is making the preparation before a storm is brewing, and before it is too late.
